From Beans to Bar: How Romex and Farmforce Are Building the Future of Traceable Cocoa and Coffee in Peru

When you walk into a supermarket and pick up a bar of chocolate or a bag of coffee, it’s easy to forget each product’s long, complex journey to get there. At Farmforce, we’re proud to be working with Romex, a leading Peruvian cocoa and coffee exporter committed to making that journey visible, responsible, and EUDR-compliant.

In March, our team—Hans Christian Fleischer, Rodney Muriuku, and Nestor Barrientos—visited Romex in the heart of Peru. What we saw on the ground was nothing short of inspiring: a forward-thinking company that’s not only investing in traceability technology but also putting farmers at the center of its sustainability journey.

From the First Mile: San Martín

Today, Farmforce supports Romex in sourcing from 500 large-scale direct farmers in the San Martín region. This means Romex is buying directly from these farmers rather than via cooperatives. This setup gives Romex a unique opportunity to have deep visibility and control over the first mile of its supply chain.

Romex is using our platform to manage farmer and field data, perform geolocation mapping, and ensure full traceability of cocoa in alignment with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The goal is clear: provide complete supply chain visibility to international buyers like General Cocoa/Sucden, Hershey’s, and Nestlé.

But this is only the beginning.

“We’re not just ticking compliance boxes—we’re building a future where customers know exactly where their cocoa and coffee come from, and farmers are recognized for doing things right”

Pedro Burga Jacobi, Senior Trader at Romex

Scaling Impact: From Cocoa to Coffee

As part of Romex’s responsible sourcing program, traceability isn’t just a regulatory requirement—it’s a business value. The partnership is expanding beyond San Martín into two new cocoa-growing regions: Cajamarca Jaén, and Chanchamayo. Even more exciting? Romex is now integrating Farmforce into its coffee supply chain, applying the same traceability standards that made their cocoa program successful.

The ambition is growing. The next phase of the partnership will cover all certified and uncertified producers across both direct and indirect supply chains, including those sourced through cooperatives. This will eventually cover between 10,000 and 15,000 farmers.

At Farmforce, traceability should be about collaboration, transparency, and impact at origin. We’re honored to walk this journey with Romex and look forward to what’s next.
